Shipping container transports Tasmania's commuters to a kelp forest

Palawa artist Emma Robertson has created an immersive kelp forest in a shipping container on the Elizabeth Street Pier in nipaluna/Hobart

"You can smell the kelp, you can see the kelp, you can touch the kelp, you can just lose yourself in this space."

 

Palawa artist Emma Robertson's Salt Water Country is a walk-through diorama in a shipping container on Elizabeth Street Pier.

 

From the ceiling of the darkened space hang rows of bull kelp, giant kelp (her favourite) and other sea grasses, and the ocean soundscape is recorded from the many southern lutruwita/Tasmania beaches where she used sustainable practices to collect the washed-up plants.

 

Emma has taken ABC Radio's Helen Shield for an all-senses tour through Salt Water Country.
