Great Southern Reef Foundation
Meet Emma Robertson, a proud Palawa woman, artist, and cultural practitioner who recently collaborated with us at the Great Southern Reef Foundation on a Google Arts and Culture feature titled "Tune in to Saltwater Country". This story, complemented by audio, delves into the profound connections the Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples have with kelp in the Great Southern Reef, showcasing the intertwined relationship between culture and nature.
Emma Robertson is passionate about exploring new ideas, pushing the boundaries, and exploring new mediums. She enjoys using natural materials in contemporary designs, artworks, and jewellery, such as kelp, fibres, quills, and shells. She aims for sustainable design and create meaningful art that sparks emotions.
Her dedication to exploring new ideas, pushing boundaries, and utilising art as a vehicle for environmental and cultural advocacy is truly inspiring. Emma's work serves as a vivid reminder of the deep spiritual and symbolic connections Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have with the land and sea — connections that are a source of pride, strength, resilience, and identity.
